Stainless Steel Finishes - What is the difference?

Read entire post: Stainless Steel Finishes - What is the difference?

What is the difference between the different finishes?

Below is an overview

Electropolished Finish - An Electropolished finish involves the stainless steel fittings being placed in a bath of specialized chemicals with a high-intensity electrical current running through it. This process peels back the outer layer of the stainless steel to increase the proportion of chromium on the surface. This type of process results in a smoother, shinier and brighter surface finish, as well as enhancing the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel.

Machine Vibratory Polish - This polishing involves placing the stainless steel fittings in a vibratory polishing machine with a polishing compound and ceramic stones, the fittings are then washed off. This gives the stainless steel a smooth and shiny finish with excellent corrosion resistance.

Matte Finish - Also a type of machine polish, matte finish uses rollers to give the fitting more of a satin grain finish. This type of finish is used for durability, low maintenance, and overall aesthetically appealing look.

Galvanised -  This is a process of applying a protective coating to steel or iron. The coating is made from zinc and is used to halt the formation of rust. Galvanization is important because it provides long-lasting protection for steel and iron products.

How do I create a Hypar Designed Shade Sail?

If you have just start looking around at shade sail designs, you will see a lot that is installed with two high posts and two low posts, this is called a Hypar Design which creates a twist in your shade sail, you can only create this design if you have 4 or more fixing points.

A hyper design is easily done with custom made shade sails but can be a bit more tricky with the buy now ready-made shade sails.

The hyper design ensures a strong shade sail that keeps its tension and doesn't flap around in the wind, this design increases tension in the shade sail, reducing flapping in the wind.

Commonly Asked Questions

What is the standard height of the poles? The standard height for the low fixing point on the poles is 2200mm from the ground

What is the average height difference between the fixing pointsMost shade sail installers would have a difference of around 1 meter or more depending on the size of the shade sail.

Is there a formula for the size of the shade sail? Yes there is, this is the formula example

7000mm x 15% = 1050mm (1050mm would be the height variation to get the hypar design) Pole heights - If you low fixing point is at 2200mm add the1050mm to get the height of the high fixing points which would be 3250mm

5000mm  x 15% = 750mm (750mm would be the height variation to get the hypar design) Pole heights - If you low fixing point is at 2200mm add the 750mm to get the height of the high fixing points which would be 2950mm

This can be made more to get a more dramatic effect.

Which sides should I make high and which sides should I make low? Work out where the sun rises and falls, remember the shade will only be directly underneath the shade sail when the sun is directly on top of the shade sail.

The lower points create a lower edge so the sun can not cut in under it as the higher edges.

Quick Guide for Installing Shade Sails

Read entire post: Quick Guide for Installing Shade Sails

We have a free shade sail installation guide you can download which has a lot of information on what you need to do when considering installing a shade sail.

(pre-made) The most common mistake people make is installing there fixing points before they get their shade sail.  To avoid any mistakes when installing a pre-made shade you need to get it first and lay it out on the ground with the fixing accessories you are going to use to erect it, such as turnbuckles (8mm 210-290mm) fully extended then put you fixing points in. If you don't allow enough room between the shade sail and fixing point, you may have trouble getting it to tension. Also, the shade sail needs to be tensioned along the bisecting line, if pulling the wrong way this can also cause the shade sail, not to tension.

(custom made) Custom made shade sail is made to fit perfectly to your already installed fixing points.  Before you install any fixing points we can give you an estimate on how much a custom made shade sail will cost. The price between are custom made shade sail and a pre-made shade sail are very different.

Do it once, do it right!

How do I choose the right climbing plant? Some plants are better-growing horizontally than vertically. Your local nursery will give you advice on what may suit your wall best depending on the design.

Climbing plants are among the most useful plants in the garden.

Deciduous climbers are great for growing over pergolas to create summer shade but allow the winter sun through. Evergreen climbers are great for growing over a fence, providing privacy or for covering an old shed or building. Climbers add lushness to the garden and can even be grown as ground covers.

Read entire post: Dyneema Rope - Worlds strongest

Dyneema is the world strongest fiber and is 15 times stronger than steel. The rope is the choice for every serious sailor worldwide because it has a very little stretch, it’s lightweight, easy splicable and is UV-resistant. This is what makes it very viable for shade-sail installations.

Dyneema ONE Max Rope is manufactured from genuine German made Dyneema fibers. This Dyneema is manufactured with the highest quality urethane coating giving it much better abrasion resistance than many other UHMWPE ropes on the market. We source our rope internationally to ensure you have access to the strongest and best products available. At The Outdoor Shop Australia, we do not compromise on quality.

Dyneema is a very high strength, low stretch rope. It floats on water and is a much safer option than steel cable. The rope is made up of fibers that are resistant to tension and bending fatigue, and it is also equipped with UV stability. It is at least ten times stronger than a steel cable and is perfect for shade sail installations using the Rope Method. Dyneema rope is compact and much lighter than the alternatives with similar strength and capabilities. Suitable for large tensile membrane structures, or large shade sail installations in high wind zones, salt water (virtually any harsh environment).

Sourcing Steel posts for Shade Sail Installation

Read entire post: Sourcing Steel posts for Shade Sail Installation

The Shady Ladies always recommend that you get your shade sail first before installing your fixing points.

Steel posts are widely used for Shade Sail installation. They can be sourced from local steel fabricators as they would need to be delivered and this would save on delivery costs if any. You are best to contact a few to find the best price.  Standard posts are 4mm 90mm galvanized posts and 1/3 of the post should be concreted in the ground for standard sun shade sail use. Wooden posts are also used but we are not able to advise which wooden posts are suitable, you will need to check with the supplier and let them know what the shade sail size is you are erecting.

Other resources to find 2nd hand posts - gumtree, eBay, local trading posts.
