Finding the Right Sized Caravan or Camper Cover | Aussie Covers Sizing Guide
Choosing the right cover size is one of the most important steps in protecting your caravan or camper. Get it right and you'll have a snug, secure fit that lasts for years. Get it wrong and you'll be dealing with a cover that flaps, sags, pools water or simply doesn't fit at all.
This guide walks you through everything you need to know — so you get it right the first time.
Step 1 — Measure the Body Length First
Start by measuring the longest length along the bottom edge of your caravan or camper's main body. This is your baseline measurement and the most important number when selecting a cover size.
Tip: Always measure in a straight line along the base — not over the roof or around any curves.
Step 2 — Account for Any Extras
This is where most people get caught out. Many vans and campers have accessories that extend beyond the main body, including:
- Toolboxes
- Gas bottles
- Spare tyres
- Stone guards
- Winches (especially common on camper trailers)
If you want these accessories covered, you'll need to add extra length to your measurement — which usually means going up one size. If you're happy to leave them exposed, your base body measurement is all you need. We can custom make additional covers if needed.

Special Considerations by Cover Type
Camper Trailers — Watch the Front
Camper trailers are the most common source of sizing mistakes. The front section often includes a winch, toolbox and stone guard combination that can add a significant amount of length beyond the main body. Always measure from the very front of these accessories to the rear of the camper to get an accurate total length before selecting your size.
Caravans & Pop Tops — Check Your Front Accessories
Many caravans are straightforward — measure the body and you're done. But if your van has front-mounted toolboxes, gas bottle carriers or other accessories you want covered, make sure to include these in your measurement. It varies from setup to setup, so take the time to check before ordering.
Should You Cover the Drawbar and Hitch?
We generally don't recommend it. Caravan covers are designed as a rectangular shape, and trying to extend them over a drawbar or hitch creates excess loose material that can:
- Collect and pool water
- Flap and wear in the wind
- Cause premature wear to the cover fabric
If you do want full coverage including the drawbar, the best solution is to build a simple support frame using electrical conduit to hold the cover shape and prevent sagging. It's a straightforward DIY project
Preventing Water Pooling — An Important Step
Water pooling is one of the most overlooked causes of cover wear and caravan damage during storage. Features like air conditioners, solar panels and roof racks can create low points where water collects and sits.
Here's how to prevent it:
- Use pool noodles, foam rolls or similar placed under the cover to create a slight dome shape that encourages runoff
- Store your van on a slight angle by adjusting the jockey wheel up or down — even a small tilt makes a big difference
- Check after rain during the first few weeks to make sure water is running off properly and not sitting in any spots
Camper Trailer Tip: If your camper has a flat top or raised rack where water tends to pool in the centre, place a basketball, crate or similar object underneath the cover to create a peak. This simple fix channels water off to the sides instead of letting it sit.
Why There's No Single Perfect Size Chart
Every caravan, pop top, hybrid and camper trailer setup is a little different. Your model, your accessories, and what you want covered all affect which size is right for you. A size chart is a great starting point, but it can only get you so far.
